Twitter Explained
www.twitter.com is a micro-blogging site that enables a person, or organisation, to post short messages which can be viewed by anyone.
If there is a person on twitter whom you would like to receive all the messages from then you can sign up to twitter, for free, and chose to ‘follow’ a person. This means that anything that they post will automatically be visible to you when you visit your twitter home page.
Obviously once you have signed up to twitter you can also post messages. You can either post new messages or you can reply to messages that you see listed.
A simple analogue is that twitter is like a very large notice board. People are pinning up on the board hundreds and hundreds of post it notes with messages on. By signing up to twitter you can also pin up notes from yourself and comment on the other ones up there.
If it sounds a little random then that’s because it is. Hence why twitter has a search facility so you can try to find messages relevant to you. At the time of writing, 29 March 2009, Twitter has approximately seven million members. Assuming half post a message one a week that’s a lot of posts! Also any of those seven million members can view your messages and potentially comment or start to follow you.
If you consistently post notes about a specific topic then without fail people will start to follow you as they want to catch all your words of wisdom!
If you want to test out the search function then sign up for free and run two searches by putting in first ‘edenchanges’ which will bring up any messages with that in and then ‘job hunting’. You will then see all the messages posted regarded ‘job hunting’ – search results via the twitter search engine are listed chronologically with the most recent first.
The first search results will probably almost exclusively bring back messages posted by Edenchanges itself with the second search showing you results from lots of different people.
If you are asking does Twitter have a purpose in your life that’s a valid question! If you have something to say i.e. a specific cause or belief to promote then it’s a perfect internet soapbox for you. If you are a reverse voyeur and want complete strangers to read your messages then again a perfect venue and finally if you are someone who likes to do slightly random research then it’s worth trying out. Oh and finally if you want to have a regular message from Edenchanges then joining up and following edenchanges at http://twitter.com/edenchanges will make it easy!
Twitter can have something to offer but do expect to have to get used to it! Good luck. . .and if you do join up then you are welcome to follow and comment on edenchanges tweets!
